New Course Offering
Debuts in the Spring of 2006
Professor Mark Miller began offering an exciting new course entitled
Problems of European Politics: Migration and Security in the Spring of 2006.
Most scholars would concur that migration issues were securitized (or linked to security
matters) in the 1980s. Yet, as Leo Lucassen argues, the perception of threat from
migration has been a recurrent theme in modern European history.
Since 9/11, Americans have viewed European Muslims as possible security threats.
The major goal of this course is to understand the nature of the threat emanating
from the highly diverse Islamic communities of Europe. Hence, a major focus will
necessarily be upon Muslim integration, or the lack thereof, into European societies.
